Imagine being given everything you need but it's all second hand or even fifth hand. Imagine there being no money or credit cards, no shops or supermarkets, no cars or trains. Imagine having your food delivered by horse and cart along with a recipe card telling you what to feed your family. Imagine Agnes the Guardian watching your every move and being able to take everything you have if you put a step wrong. Welcome to Celia's world!

It was the cover of this book that caught my attention. It's clean and to the point and, being an environmental studies grad, I couldn't pass by.Daily life in England some 30 years after the Upheaval is still recognisable, but there are some noticeable differences. There is nothing new, everything is used, re-used and then re-used again and again. All manufacturing has ceased and residents of England are dependent on the cast offs of their neighbours, but many items are becoming un-usable. The structure is pushed to the limits and something is bound to break.
Celia and her husband Robin have been feeling this strain and are no longer complacent about their lot in this well ordered life.
This new society didn't really seem like much of a stretch from being possible. Some people would come out better and others would be worse off, but on average, would most people really notice especially after a few decades.
I liked the way that author Glenis Stott introduced the concept of no choice in your life and that there was no benefit to people taking initiative. Even that the population in the cities were losing the basic skills of how to care for their belongings, since nothing belonged to them.
This novel is an example of the characters within the book carrying a good concept too far.

Without Glenis Stott 9781291355390 Books Reviews
This story began very much like Agenda 21 by Glenn Beck and Harriet Parke and so set the mood as depressing and sober. I was not looking for such a book. Nevertheless l trudged through the opening then found a pleasant surprise when the heroine took fate into her own hands.
The ending was unexpected but worth getting to.
This book started off really good, but it became boring very quick and seemed to turn into a completely different story in the middle of the book. I had a hard time finishing this, but I wanted to know how it ended. Not a book I would recommend to anyone.
...marred by horrendous editing. Really, if even the author can't keep the husband's name straight, how are we, as readers, expected to stay in the story? Coupled with the inability to keep to past tense, often within the same SENTENCE, if you can believe it, what should have been ( and really could have been) a lovely story was often just a slog through the author's intentions.
I found that once I started reading this story that I didn't want to put it down. I think it was well written about what could happen in the future. I found that I really wanted the story to continue, it just ended too soon. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about what could happen when everything you know changes.
Enjoyable and well paced, "Without" gave a new perspective on an Orwellian future where everything is rationed and nothing is quite certain. Told from a mother's point of view, i found this book an easy and comfortable read that put its own twist on a few familiar concepts.
I was intrigued by the premise of the book, and I wanted to see how the society worked. Without has a an extra touch to the general 1984 type storyline where there is no new production, and virtually everything is recycled and reused to an extreme. I really enjoyed Without, and I wish I'd read it sooner cause I've had it for about a year.
I really liked this book, wasn't sure I would going into it as its not the kind of book I normally read.
I liked the characters and really enjoyed the storyline for the most part. It is unrealistic but at the same time I could almost see something like this happening in the future.
The only reason I rated this 4 starts instead of 5 was that the ending wrapped up much too quickly. I kept getting closer to the end and thinking there must be a sequel because I didn't see how it could be so near the end, turns out it was a very short epilogue at the end that seemed much too hasty. Would have much rather had the book be longer or have a sequel than to end so abruptly.
Would definitely read more about these characters if the author wrote another book, and I have recommended a few people I know to read this book and I rarely do that.
